January 2011 Newsletter

Dr. Jorge Eagar and Rolando Acevedo have invited FOMA members and friends to view Dr. Eagar’s unique artistic assemblage of over 1200 individual nativity related figurines collected over 55 years and arranged into one large tableau known as a Nacimiento.  This event will take place on Tuesday, January 4, from 5 - 8 pm. at their home:  1630 W. Laredo St., Chandler 85224.  The suggested donation is $10 per person (children under 12 are free);  half will benefit Dr. Eagar’s church and the other half will be donated to FOMA.  Call 480-786-3165 to arrange your visit.

The Book Club will meet at the home of Greta Woods on Tuesday, January 18, at 1 pm.  The book to be discussed is Chronicle of a Death Foretold by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. If you need more information or would like to join the Book Club, call Kotzie Wheeler at 480-966-6675.

In preparation for the Phoenix Art Museum (and FOMA sponsored) exhibit “Mexican Modernism from the Andre Blaisten Collection”, Clayton Kirking (president of FOMA from 1986 - 88) will speak on Sunday, January 30, at the Franciscan Renewal Center at 2 pm.   His presentation will cover the show itself, as well as current trends in Mexican art.  There will be a reception afterwards at the Center.  Mr. Kirking is very familiar with the Blaisten collection and will be able to give us valuable information and answer questions.  This exciting lecture  - another free event open to FOMA members and their guests - is not to be missed.  Call 602-334-6585 for more information.

FOMA has a new phone number:  602-334-6585.  Please use this number when calling FOMA for information about any event.  Also, pass this information along to any who may be using the old number.

The Home Tour, subtitled “Casitas Encantadas and Mexican Mercado” is coming up!  Please clear your calendar for Sunday, February 27, from 10 am to 4 pm.   We need volunteers at all homes and for other duties, so please answer “Yes!”  when Sally Hutchison (our volunteer coordinator) calls!

Thanks to all FOMA members for your help and participation during this past year.

•We are looking forward to an exciting  2011.   FOMA will be a sponsor of a major Mexican art show in July at the Phoenix Art Museum.  On January 30th, Clayton Kirking, a Past-President of FOMA, will be in town to talk about this exhibition.   Details of both events will follow.

•Another date to save is our annual House Tour and Mercado on February 27th.  This is our major fund- raiser and your participation is needed to make it a success.
